Yesterday Alexander Stafford,Conservative Member of Parliament for Rother Valley, called for the Maltby Miners Welfare Institute (‘the Stute’) to be saved from sale in Parliament.

Miners have paid for the Stute over the years out of their wages to safeguard their mining heritage and Alexander Stafford is disappointed that CISWO, the coal mining charity, has chosen to put the historic site on the market.

Alexander Stafford has long supported campaigns to save this cultural landmark for future generations in Maltby and across Rother Valley.

On Monday Alexander Stafford had submitted an Early Day Motion to formally ask CISWO to work with the Maltby Miners Welfare & Recreation Protection Group and other similar organisations to protect the Stute and called for this community asset to be opened for use by everybody in the area.

Early Day Motions are an essential way of raising important issues in parliament and it is hoped demonstrated to CISWO the importance of this matter.

Last week, Alexander Stafford personally met with the Maltby Miners Welfare & Recreation Protection Group, CISWO, and chair of Maltby Town Council at the Maltby Stute to try and find a way forward to protect the facilities for the community.

Commenting, Alexander Stafford MP said:

“It is vitally important to me that my constituents in Rother Valley are able to preserve this part of their mining heritage and I will continue to advocate for the Stute wherever I can so that they are able to do so. I am still working with Maltby Miners Welfare & Recreation Protection Group and others to explore productive ways of moving forward.”

“I am still hopeful a constructive resolution can be found and that is why I have now raised this issue in Parliament.”

Commenting, Leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP said:

“Alexander Stafford is a brilliant campaigner for his constituency and for the interests of his communities. He is right to draw attention to the importance of the Maltby social club and recreation area. Such places often sit at the heart of the community, drawing together people of all ages and interests, and he serves his constituents so well in his support for the Maltby Miners Welfare Institute.”
