Once again, Jake Richards has shown exactly where his loyalties lie — and it is not with the people of Rother Valley.
This week, Parliament had the opportunity to do the right thing. Conservatives put forward a motion to refer Sir Keir Starmer to the Commons Privileges Committee to investigate whether the Prime Minister deliberately misled the House of Commons over the appointment of his friend Peter Mandelson as Washington Ambassador. It was a straightforward question of parliamentary accountability. It was a chance for every MP to stand up and say: no one is above scrutiny, not even the Prime Minister.
Jake Richards looked at that opportunity, and voted to kill it.
Let that sink in. Rother Valley's Labour MP, the Government's own Assistant Whip, trooped through the lobby to protect Keir Starmer from an independent investigation into his own conduct. Not because it was right. Not because his constituents demanded it. But because Starmer told him to, and Jake Richards — as he always does — obeyed.
This is the same Jake Richards who has the brass neck to claim his Labour colleagues are not being forced to vote the way they do. He is literally the Government Whip. Forcing colleagues to vote in line with the leadership is his job. The hypocrisy would be laughable if the consequences were not so serious.
What are they hiding? Why is Starmer so desperate to avoid this investigation that he whipped his MPs — under threat, according to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, of losing their jobs — to block it? If the Prime Minister genuinely believes he did nothing wrong over the Mandelson affair, he should have welcomed the scrutiny. Instead, he sent his enforcers, including Jake Richards, to slam the door shut.
Rother Valley is not a safe Labour fiefdom to be taken for granted. The people of this constituency — working people, proud people, people who believe in honesty and accountability — deserve a representative who will speak truth to power, not one who serves as Starmer's loyal gatekeeper in Westminster. Time and again, Richards has chosen his ministerial career over his constituents. Time and again, he has put the Labour whip above the people of Rother Valley.
I will not stop highlighting this betrayal. The people of Rother Valley need to know what their MP is doing in their name — and right now, he is doing Keir Starmer's bidding while Rother Valley gets nothing in return.
Rother Valley deserves so much better.
