Last month, Alexander Stafford MP and Rotherham Conservative councillors led the fight against an outrageous £46.65 backcharge dumped on thousands of Rother Valley households due to a “billing error” by Yorkshire Water.
Ofwat has now replied to Alexander and Maltby and Hellaby Conservative councillors and their message is clear: tough luck. Despite also asking our Labour Secretary of State for urgent intervention, the Government hasn’t even bothered to respond. Yorkshire Water and Severn Trent are being allowed to push the cost of their own incompetence onto customers.
With average household water bills set to continue to soar over the next five years this is completely unacceptable.
Labour said they had a “Plan for Water” when they wanted your vote. Turns out it’s just a plan to make you pay more, sooner, for less. No signficant improvement. Encouraging Ofwat to allow hikes in water bills. No consideration for hard-working struggling families. Some headlines about holding water bosses to account for “illegal” pollution, but there is actually no significant change to the previous Government’s plan to steadily reduce sewage input into rivers over the next decade.
You’re paying more - for what?
Alexander says “It’s a disgrace. Labour’s plan for water is a plan for stealth taxes and weak regulation. And it’s Rother Valley residents who are being punished for it.”
