Alexander Stafford, MP for Rother Valley, today hosted a virtual stakeholder meeting to tackle issues relating to water supply and drainage in connected villages, Brookhouse and Slade Hooton.

The drainage problem, dating back 50 years, stems from the fact that the discharge pipe, managed Severn Trent Water, is insufficient to meet the needs of Brookhouse residents, a factor only exacerbated by recent housing developments in Thurcroft adding to the burden on the system. It means that heavy rainfall often causes drains to back up and, in the worst cases, sewage leaks onto the streets.

In nearby Slade Hooton, an outdated water supply pipe, managed by Yorkshire Water, often leaves residents of the village without water access.

Alexander Stafford hosted a stakeholder roundtable attended by Brookhouse Resident's Association, Severn Trent Water, Yorkshire Water and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), to press the companies responsible for action on this important issue.

Commenting, Alexander said

"It is not good enough that residents in Brookhouse often wake up to sewage on their streets. This would be unacceptable even if it happened only a few times per year, but the fact is, this is a regular occurrence and I am astounded that the issue has not been taken seriously before now.

This is a public health issue and I am calling on the companies responsible to work together and find an integrated solution. It makes sense for Severn Trent Water and Yorkshire Water to co-ordinate their efforts in these villages. I welcome that the Slade Hooton pipework is due to be upgraded in the next financial year and I will work with residents to ensure that Brookhouse issues are also addressed"
