A new chapter in youth development and community engagement has begun in Maltby with the official opening of a brand-new Army Cadet Detachment – the first of its kind to launch in South Yorkshire in over 20 years. Operated under the South Yorkshire and Humberside Army Cadets, this marks a significant moment for the region, bringing fresh opportunities for young people to gain valuable life skills, build confidence, and be part of a proud tradition.

The Maltby detachment is proudly affiliated and badged under the Scots Guards, a choice deeply rooted in the area’s heritage. The Scots Guards were selected due to Maltby’s historic connections to Scottish miners, many of whom settled in the area during the height of the coal mining era. This affiliation not only honours local history but also strengthens the sense of identity and pride within the community.

The creation of the detachment is the result of over two years of dedicated planning and advocacy, with local councillor Adam Tinsley playing a pivotal role. Cllr Tinsley was instrumental in initiating discussions and has been actively involved from the very beginning, helping to turn the long-standing vision into a reality. His efforts were strongly supported by local Member of Parliament Alexander Stafford, who also backed the opening and recognised the positive impact the detachment will have on young people in the area.

Army Cadets is open to young people aged 12 to 18 years old, offering a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience. Detachment evenings are completely free to attend, and all cadets are provided with a uniform at no cost. Cadets take part in adventurous training, fieldcraft, first aid, leadership activities, and learn valuable skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience. The programme is designed to inspire, challenge, and build character – all within a supportive and structured environment.

The new detachment in Maltby is set to become a hub of activity and opportunity, offering local youth a unique path for personal growth, community service, and even future career development. With its strong historical roots and promising future, the Maltby Army Cadet Detachment stands as a proud new symbol of community spirit and youth empowerment in South Yorkshire.
